CranioSacral comes from cranio, meaning head, and sacral, which refers to the base of the spine. Therefore, the CranioSacral
system means the brain and spinal cord, including the cerebrospinal fluid, the surrounding membranes ("meninges") and the bones of the spine and skull. CranioSacral Therapy
is a nonintrusive, gentle manipulation of the skull and spinal system.
There is a rhythmical motion in the CranioSacral system created by the rise and fall of cerebrospinal fluid, which causes a corresponding movement of the cranial bones. A CranioSacral
therapist is trained to feel this motion with their hands and determine if there is any restriction, which may contribute to illness.
Imbalances in the CranioSacral system may begin before birth, or may occur during a difficult childbirth, or from any number of traumas throughout life. CranioSacral Therapy may be used on people of any age from birth to death. Infants may find that CranioSacral Therapy relieves conditions such as earaches, sinus congestion, vomiting, irritability, and hyperactivity. Older people may use CranioSacral Therapy to address multiple disorders involving the brain and spinal cord, including chronic pain, headache, temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), mood disorders, dyslexia, autism, stroke, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, dizziness, tinnitus, edema, recurrent infections, hypertension, hypotension, and some types of muscular problems.
